It should be assumed that all allegations below remain unsubstantiated until corroborated by independent information. However, Steele’s main allegation has proven not just true but prophetic: Months before the FBI even acknowledged the existence of an investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia-even before WikiLeaks began publishing emails stolen from Trump’s opponents by Russian hackers-Steele had numerous sources both within and outside the Russian government confirming the Trump campaign’s collusion with Russia.īelow is a searchable version of the Dossier in full as published by BuzzFeed. It has also been the subject of lawsuits filed by parties named in the document. President Donald Trump’s allies in Congress and in the media have long attempted to use the Steele Dossier to discredit the Russia investigation. As such, it contains some allegations that are unverified and potentially unverifiable, as well as some that have been contested or disproven. The Steele Dossier is human intelligence, apparently intended to be used not as direct evidence but as a road map for further investigation. The publication marked a turning point in the public understanding of the Russia investigation, in part because the dossier documents real-time allegations and evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 presidential election. However, FBI Director James Comey said earlier this month that the bureau was probing whether there was collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government. On January 10, 2017, BuzzFeed News published an intelligence dossier compiled by Christopher Steele, a former British MI6 intelligence officer who was considered credible by U.S. Trump called it "a disgrace," "fake news," "phony stuff," and " crap" when the reports surfaced. The documents even referenced a potentially treasonous act. The Trump dossier was a leak of unsubstantiated anti-Trump documents that touched on everything from Russia allegedly having leverage to extort him to alleged sexual escapades. The site, however, has apologized to Gubarev and blacked out his name from the document online. "We're surprised by the plaintiffs' desire to make light of this matter," Buzzfeed said in a statement. Buzzfeed is "surprised"įor its part, Buzzfeed remains "confident" that the lawsuit will be dismissed. "Defendants simply do not want to be in Florida, because they believe they will receive more favorable treatment in New York," the document claims. In the aftermath, Gawker filed for bankruptcy and auctioned off itself. After starting with a kitty reference, the court filing (PDF) claims that the dossier, as applied to Gubarev, does not have "any basis in fact whatsoever." The document from Gubarev's legal team also focuses on a jurisdictional fight as to whether the case should be dismissed or heard in Florida or New York. Gubarev's lawyers hint that Buzzfeed might not want to face a jury in Florida, the state where a jury concluded that Gawker should pay $140 million to Hulk Hogan for publishing a sex tape of the former pro wrestler.
